Machinal by Sophie Treadwell is a play that tells the story of a young woman who goes through the phases of her life where she comes up the mechanized structures of society and patriarchy as she searches for what she truly desires. The expressionistic play uses rhythm and dialogue to create the mechanized feel of the play. She through the course of her journey makes a series of choices against or with the status quo culminating in the murder of her husband.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Hilary Buffum is a Bay Area actor and director and an alum of the San Francisco State Theatre department. She has directed short new works including most recently Enough by Haunah King. She also co-produced two Shakespeare plays with HearthFire theatre company in 2015 and 2016. She is excited to be directing this staged reading of Machinal.
