Berkeleyside Review: Totally fun and totally free, Moliere’s ‘The Imaginary Invalid’ shines
Berkeleyside Arts writer, Emily S. Mendel, gave our of production of Moliers's The Imaginary Invalid a glowing review See: Totally fun and totally free, Moliere’s ‘The Imaginary Invalid’ shines. Jump the fold for a few quotes from the review.
I encourage you to come to the John Hinkel Park Amphitheater in the next few weeks to see for yourself. The cast is first-rate, especially Saunders as Toinette. The scene in which she does quick changes behind a screen while alternatively pretending to be a doctor and herself is very well done. The direction, costumes and sound effects greatly enhance the production.
We in Berkeley are fortunate to have nonprofit theater producers such as Actors Ensemble, the longest-running theatrical organization in Berkeley. Out of pure love of theater, they have presented cultural offerings at no cost or affordable prices since 1957, with free productions in the park since 2013. The Imaginary Invalid is the last show of this summer’s season.
The Imaginary Invalid plays at the John Hinkel Park Amphitheater, 41 Somerset Place, in Berkeley, on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 8 at 4 p.m., with a special show on Labor Day, Sept. 3. All shows are free. The amphitheater can seat 300 people. Bring a pillow, blanket, or lawn chair and enjoy. The performance is about 2 hours, including a short intermission. Grilled hot dogs, veggie dogs, and corn on the cob are available at intermission (suggested donation of $5). Parking is limited to neighboring residential streets.
